TVS- AIHA Student Memorial Fund

Initially established as a tribute to the late Randy Ogle and Gary Kephart, this memorial fund honors those who have had an outstanding, lifetime contribution and dedication to the practice of industrial hygiene; have provided expertise and advancements in the field of industrial hygiene; had a profound influence on their peers and young professionals through education and mentorship; and selflessly served the TVS-AIHA community as board members and advisors. The individuals honored by this award are locally and nationally acclaimed in the industrial hygiene profession and have made a profound impact on all who had the privilege of working with them.

Gary S. Kephart
Certified Industrial Hygienist,

Registered Radiation Protection Technologist

Gary had more than 35 years of experience in Environmental, Health, Safety and Radiation Protection involving operation, maintenance and demolition of radiological and nuclear facilities. He began his career in the nuclear industry in late 1976 with a unique combination of hands-on involvement, professional credentials and team building success.

Gary actively served on the Tennessee Valley Section (TVS) AIHA Board of Directors from 2012 until 2018 and was President of the local chapter from 2016-2017.

Gary enjoyed helping as many organizations as possible on both the national and local levels. He supported the Health Physics Society for over 25 years and the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) for over 30 years. He was awarded the Arthur F. Humm, Jr. memorial award for his long-term dedication to the NRRPT. He was continually encouraging people to further pursue certifications and dozens of coworkers can attest to Gary’s positive influence on their careers.

His wit, positive influence and organization service will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to work with him.

Randall B. Ogle

Randy had 36 years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety with a focus on education, government agencies, and consulting. Randy started his career as an ESH educator as an adjunct professor at Texas A&M, University of Alabama, University of Alabama Birmingham, and University of Tennessee with a focus in environmental health. During his early career he also worked for OSHA in Springfield, Massachusetts as a journeyman Industrial Hygienist and Compliance Officer. Randy devoted much of his working career to Oak Ridge National Laboratory where his professional efforts included important contributions to the fields of nanoscale materials science, safety and health.

He enjoyed being involved in many professional organizations, including serving as the AIHA Confined Spaces Technical Committee Chair from 1987-1991, TVS-AIHA President from 1992-1993, ASTM Standards and Development for D22 and E34 from 1989-1998, and was an AAIH Fellow from 1980-2008.

After leaving Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Randy continued his work as a consultant, working to advance ESH knowledge in the field of nanoscale materials science. Randy was a doctoral candidate and an advocate for protecting the environment and helping people in need.
